About My Photography
Families all have that one thing that they all do together: watch the same show, have dinners together, play board games, etc. My family does photography. My dad, who has always been amazing with anything technology related, is the technical expert. My mom always had the artistic eye for composition. Between the two of them, I knew how to use a DSLR by the age of 10. I am mostly self-taught (though I have now to taken a photography class at Duke University). Even while at college, I have kept photography in my life. I worked as a photographer in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens gathering photos for their development department which are used for donor projects and promotion. I also continue to take pictures in my limited free time.
In high school, I was a leader and member of the National Art Honor Society (NAHS). Members are selected for their skills in the arts and their academic performance overall. NAHS hosts 2 art shows per school year in which it is mandatory for all members to enter artwork, invites artists to speak at our school, and promotes art on campus. For the art shows, I submitted my photography although I only took film/video and 3D design classes while in high school.
I have also won a few awards for photography. In 2017 and 2018, I got a Gold Key and an Honorable Mention in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Moreover, I was awarded the 2019 National Geographic Student Photo Contest Grand Prize Winner. The prize for the National Geographic contest was a free trip to any of their student photo expeditions. I chose to go to Tanzania because it sounded like the greatest adventure out of all the options. I was there for two weeks under the instruction of two professional photographers (Federico Pardo and Magdalena Stawinski) and a National Geographic photographer (Brent Stirton). That trip opened my eyes to pursuing photography in the future.
I hope to have photography always be a part of my life not solely because it is a thing my family does together, but because the images you can take are so powerful. I first learned to take pictures in the Ballona Wetlands near my house which host many endangered species. That then expanded to the Sierra Nevadas of wild mustangs. I have used some of my mustang pictures to raise money in charity auctions for the Ballona Wetlands and I hope to continue to spread awareness of many conservation issues.
